A Boy Of Simple Tastes
I often joke about how my oldest son is destined to be a foodie -- he's already specific in his salt preferences (Andean rock salt then sea salt, over regular table salt) and his favorite food other than olives in any form is deep dish spanokopita. I harbour no such thoughts with my youngest. He has wonderfully simple tastes -- his favorite food in the world is a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat. His second favorite is macaroni and cheese (homemade, of course). As his birthday is tomorrow, I asked him what he'd like for his special supper and dessert.
He pondered this for a moment and then declared, "Peanut butter sandwiches!"
I asked him if he was sure -- if there wasn't something he'd like more that he can't have just any old day of the week. He thought for a moment more and then announced that he wanted "rabbit noodles". We might go through a case of these a year (12 in a case), and all things considered they're really not nutritionally terrible in terms of convenience food. Besides, what the birthday boy wants, the birthday boy gets!
"Sure!" I said. "What would you like for a cake?"
"I want a Rice Krispie square cake, Mom. I want it shaped like a castle."
If you'll remember, this is the boy who wanted to be a robot dragon for Halloween -- I had so much fun making that, my mind started spinning with possibilities for this. So much more fun than baking and decorating a traditional cake, I started making a mental list of decorations and ingredients. I can sculpt with Rice Krispies!
So today I'll be in the kitchen making three or four batches of Rice Krispie squares, a serving tray of gummy shark and snake embedded Jello Jigglers and sketching out my architectural plans for castle building.
Sometimes simple tastes are the most fun to which to cater. ;)
