Day 30 - Holding Space

8:30pm:

Version 3 of my pita recipe was good, but it’s still not quite there. I’ll be making version 4 tomorrow. I enjoy the science of working on a recipe — how little changes here and there can affect the final product so much.

I made curried beef and my favourite sweet potato and coconut curry for supper. It was a good way to use up the rest of the pitas I made earlier, and it’s been awhile since we’ve had curry for supper. It has the extra benefit of giving me delicious leftovers for breakfast tomorrow morning, too.

The biggest complaint at supper was that I didn’t make more beef curry, but to be fair I hadn’t realized I was so low on some whole spices so I had to make a half batch instead of a full one.

I’ve been falling out of routine a bit lately, and not making my daily lists, so I’m not sure what is for supper tomorrow. I expect there are enough leftovers from the past couple nights to make do.

Maybe I will bake something yummy for dessert tomorrow instead.

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about the act of holding space for others, and was reminded of this poem.

I don’t remember when I first encountered it, but it stayed with me. As a parent, I have learned to hold space for my kids, but this poem was the first time I ever realized that I should hold space for myself, too.

Holding space for ourselves doesn’t come naturally to most people.

I see people struggling right now with travel restrictions, immense changes to their daily routines, and the ongoing concern of “what happens next?” and I hope that they are taking some time to just sit and create space for themselves. It’s easy to get lost in meeting the needs of others, especially in a crisis.

Leeds, Grenville, & Lanark COVID-19 Cases

Our numbers are up again today, and I’m so deeply tired of seeing people in the neighbohood Facebook groups trying to justify behavior that continues to put others at risk — like they are somehow special and the rules don’t apply to them.

Trump has stated he expects the border to be open again soon. Thankfully Trudeau and Freeland have clearly stated that is not going to happen on the American timeline, and at this point Ford is supporting that move. I wish the Conservatives would zip it and stop trying to sow discord and suspicion of our government.

We need to trust our leadership more than ever right now.

Creating an aura of distrust creates a risk to public health.
