DIY: "Old Made New" Candle Lantern*

Who doesn't love a touch of vintage flair on a summer patio? Taking something old and re-purposing or re-envisioning it is a style technique as old as time. Cheerios is doing it with their classic staple of childhood past and present, by introducing their new Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch -- my kids couldn't wait to open the box and try it, and give it their full endorsement! Backyard entertaining is a summer must for us -- our small house makes indoor events a challenge. Here is a simple candle lantern you can make yourself to decorate your breakfast nook or your backyard gazebo!

What you need:

  • vintage glass top canning jars
  • coffee beans
  • candles

Fill your jar roughly 1/3 full of coffee beans. (This is a great way to use up stale coffee beans, but if you are looking for something a touch more colourful marbles look really great, too!)

Once filled, position your candle inside the jar. The candle should be at least 1.5" below the rim of the jar. When done using your candle outside, keep it nice and dry by replacing the glass lid and rim.

Bonus: use the glass lid as a coaster!
