Flats Handwashing Challenge: Day 7
Today is Day 7 of the Flats and Handwashing Challenge, hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry. This year, there are over 450 participants from around the world. Today is the last day of the challenge. Most of today's diapers will be getting changed by my husband, as I'm off to work and leaving my 2yr old in the care of his father and older brothers.
All in all, I didn't find the challenge terribly challenging. What I did find, or perhaps I should say "rediscovered", was a love of simplicity in diapering. The fancy, high-end diapers are certainly fun, but there is a beauty in taking something this far back to basics.
Whether you choose cloth for financial, health or environmental reasons, there is plain Jane awesomeness in a pile of clean, folded flats. They're trimmer and more absorbent than a lot of those expensive, fancy diapers, they are less prone to the problems of the high tech options, and they are so very easy to use. I suspect my flats will be getting used even more often after this challenge than they were beforehand. In fact, I'm already planning to sell a bunch of pockets that I can't see myself using enough to keep.
Did I learn anything? Well, black rubber plungers stink when immersed in hot water, and it is very important to make sure all the cotton oils have been removed from unbleached cotton before tie-dying, but really this challenge just reaffirmed my love of cloth diapering. I hope my posts have been helpful, or even inspiring, to others and I am happy to have had the opportunity to participate.
