A Day Of Small Things

I have my furnace turned off today and all the windows thrown wide open to capture this first gasp of Spring. Mellow tunes seemed to fit the mood, so I loaded up a few Travis albums to play on random shuffle. Spring smelled so good, that I decided my kitchen floor needed the same treatment -- I'm about half-done now (small house + small kitchen = scrubbing in stages). I also baked a cake for no reason at all really, except that my birthday is later this week and I don't imagine I'll have a birthday cake.

There's just something about the smell of fresh baking in a clean kitchen on a Spring-like day that is so very soul satisfying.

For added good measure and extra points in domesticity, I'm making Nova Scotia style baked beans with some of the Jacob's Cattle beans I packmuled back from the East Coast last month. If you've only ever had baked beans made with navy beans you really don't know what you're missing.

Two things struck me while making the beans today:

  1. We use honey in large enough quantities that my husband keeps a 3.5 gallon bucket of the stuff in our kitchen at all times.
  2. I am enough of a molasses-lover that I have a 5 kg jug of molasses in the bottom of the kitchen closet.

I'm not sure what that says about us, but it made me giggle a little.
