All in Activism

The recent verdict in the court case of #HeWhoMustNotBeNamed was expected, but utterly disappointing. For many of us, this verdict is like digging fingernails into an open wound: those of us who, in the lead up to this trial, were declared liars because our attacks were never reported to police -- who were coloured as less than truthful because we waited days/months/years before being able to talk about our experiences at all.

Our daughters deserve better.

More Than Tolerance

My 5yr old is equal parts "crazy hyena child" and "wise old soul". I am often taken aback by statements he makes, or stumped by questions he asks. Children are amazingly perceptive, largely untainted by the cynicism we acquire with age, and I find he is particularly so.

Today, out of the blue, he turned to me and said, "Mommy, did you know that a boy and a boy can get married? And that a girl and a girl can get married? And that boys and girls can get married?"

Missed Connection

You were drunk and sweaty, and reeked of cigarette smoke. You were wearing a red shirt and a medal. You were walking with a friend. It was late afternoon and the rain had stopped, the sun making the air sultry with humidity. I was on my way to the store to run an errand after work.
